BEDWETTING IN CHILDREN

 BEDWETTING IN CHILDREN

Stop Beating, embarrassing that child who is bedwetting, research as shown that it runs in the family.

If one parent bedwet, there is 44percent chance your child will bedwet and if both bedwet, there is 77 percent chance they will bedwet.

Children between 6-7years may bedwet, it usually not a major problem although it could signify a major problem such as neurogenic bladder, urethral valves, diabetes insipidus, polyuric kidney failure.

Sometimes chronic constipation in children can trigger bedwetting

If you doubt and worried about your child bedwetting, do they urinate on themselves during the day.

The nerves which are responsible for micturition in children are usually not matured( myelinated) hence they may not have control over the flow of urine both in day and night time.

If however your child could control urine during the day without wetting himself, then there is usually no major cause for alarm, it could be they sleep so deeply that they find it hard to wake up and urinate.

Or the bladder fill up so fast and trigger the muscles that lock the bladder ( detrusor muscles) and hence they involuntarily pee on themselves.

The major reasons why you must find a solution if it persist after 7 years, it kills their self esteem.

Hence th first step you must take includes

1. fluid restriction in the afternoon-evening.

2.Picking up the sleeping child to urinate.

3.If the child shows signs of constipation, this must be treated before the urination problems

4. If the child urinates during the day, this must be treated (primarily with bladder training) before nighttime wetting.

5. If the child shows any of the following warning signs, further investigation is needed before the bedwetting can be treated

- General symptoms such as fatigue, nausea and weight loss

- Excessive thirst with the need to drink at night (immediately look for glucose in the urine!)

- Bladder emptying difficulties

- Pronounced snoring problems or breathing pause at night!
